If you want to empty a USB flash drive or nuke one of your partitions, a simple format will do. For this, you can either rely on the operating system's default tools or you could turn to third-party software if you're looking for something more reliable. A good example, in this case, is SuperDiskFormatter, which erases everything on a given drive, changes the file system and volume label, as well as a few other things. Though it's not something that surpasses the basic formatting utility by much, you may still find it more comfortable to work with this lightweight application.

SuperDiskFormatter comes as a single executable, which you can download and run right away, without having to go through an installation process. The application works on all modern Windows platforms, and it doesn't require any special tools or drivers. Also, it doesn't have a significant impact on your computer's performance.

Once you launch the application, you can start preparing a formatting process on its compact user interface, which should only take a few seconds. Besides selecting the drive you want to format and specifying a label name, you can also set a new file system for that drive. The software is capable of changing the file system between popular formats, like NTFS and FAT32, as well as lesser used ones, namely exFAT, reFS and UDF.

Just like the basic formatting utility, SuperDiskFormatter lets you reallocate the unit size on the target drive, and you may also set it to perform a quick format if you are in a hurry or a standard one if you want to be thorough. The software does, however, come with something you don't see in the default formatting tool. Its force dismount feature allows you to dismount an entire partition, which is useful if you don't want to use it as a separate drive anymore. The best part is that you can do this by simply clicking a checkbox.

If you need to format your disks without too much trouble, you can certainly rely on SuperDiskFormatter to get the job done.

Pros

The application is lightweight and doesn't need to be installed. Besides formatting, it can also change the file system of the target drive. SuperDiskFormatter can also force dismount partitions.

Cons

The application doesn't bring too much to the table. It's force dismount feature and support for other file systems make it a tool for a certain user category with specific needs.
